Fortis Escorts, Okhla performed a 25-minute surgery on a 65-year-old Bihar woman to seal a spinal stent, relieve her of discomfort, and restore her ability to walk. Vertebral Stentoplasty is an uncommon treatment, and the surgeons at Fortis Escorts, Okhla, claim to have performed the first instance of it in North India with this case study.

The patient couldnt stand or walk because of severe discomfort caused by a compression fracture of the L1 vertebra, which is the top region of the lower back. The patient had a history of osteoporosis, hypertension, diabetes, coronary artery disease, and osteoarthritis. Following a medical evaluation, it was discovered that the patient had an osteoporotic compression fracture of the vertebra.

An innovative procedure called stenting involves inserting a stent inside the spinal column and then filling it with bone cement.

The Director of orthopedics and joint replacement, Dr. Kaushal Kant Mishra, claims that stentoplasty is identical to other stenting treatments. To ensure accuracy during the kyphoplasty treatment, a titanium stent is used. He claimed that spinal stentoplasty might be performed under local anesthesia similar to cardiac stenting.

In stentoplasty, a titanium expandable cage is put into the broken or compressed vertebra. The collapsed bone is then raised, and the height is restored by expanding the cage inside. The vertebral body and the stents are then filled with bone cement while the stents are left inside. Due to the quick recovery and lack of complications following the procedure, the patient can immediately walk, improving their quality of life.

In India, vertebral stentingoplasty is a rare surgery that significantly improves spine procedures. The last quarter of 2022 saw the global introduction of this relatively new implant system.
